About This Experience

Discover the beauty, symbolism, and sacred artistry of African beadwork through this immersive cultural workshop. In this hands-on experience, guests will create their own custom waist bead and anklet set using locally sourced beads, colors, charms, and traditional design inspiration from Sierra Leone and across West Africa.

More than adornment, beads have long carried stories of femininity, spirituality, protection, maturity, sensuality, status, and identity. Each guest will leave with their handcrafted bead set, knowledge of traditional bead symbolism, a deeper understanding of African adornment traditions, a keepsake pouch, and herbal tea with light refreshments.

The Cultural Significance of Waist Beads

Waist beads have existed throughout Africa for centuries, particularly within West African cultures. Historically worn by women and girls to symbolize womanhood, fertility, sensuality, spirituality, and maturity, beads marked important life transitions — coming of age, marriage, motherhood, spiritual initiation, protection, and healing.

During the Transatlantic Slave Trade, many Africans were stripped of physical symbols connected to identity and belonging. Yet across generations, fragments of these traditions survived in memory, adornment, dance, spirituality, and storytelling throughout the African diaspora. Today, waist beads continue to represent reconnection to ancestry, feminine power, self-awareness, beauty rooted in heritage, and remembering what was never fully lost.
