Step into a deeper connection with culture, beauty, memory, and tradition through this intimate hands-on headwrap experience offered by Salone Hidden Gems. This excursion is more than learning how to tie a scarf. It is a journey through identity, resilience, creativity, and remembrance.
Guests will participate in a guided cultural workshop where they will learn three traditional and modern African headwrap styles using locally sourced Sierra Leonean scarves and fabrics. Each participant will leave with three locally made scarves, step-by-step wrapping guidance, cultural storytelling and historical context, a mini photo session in their finished styles, and herbal tea with light local refreshments.
Throughout West Africa, head coverings have long represented dignity, maturity, spirituality, tribe, social status, and womanhood. In Sierra Leone and across the continent, the wrapping of the head was often viewed as an art form passed from mother to daughter.
During the Transatlantic Slave Trade, enslaved African women carried these traditions with them across the ocean. Though stripped of language, land, and family, many preserved cultural memory through style, fabric, wrapping techniques, songs, food, and oral storytelling.
In some regions of the Americas, laws such as the Tignon Laws in Louisiana attempted to regulate and suppress Black women’s beauty and identity by forcing them to cover their hair. Yet African women transformed the headwrap into a symbol of resistance, elegance, creativity, and survival. The headwrap became a quiet act of remembrance, a connection to homeland traditions, a symbol of pride despite oppression, and a way for culture to survive through generations.
