Experience Sierra Leone through one of its greatest forms of storytelling: food. This immersive culinary excursion by Salone Hidden Gems invites guests into the heart of Sierra Leonean culture through local market exploration, hands-on cooking, shared traditions, and community around the table.
The journey begins with a guided visit to a local market, where guests shop alongside their host for fresh ingredients. Guests then return to the kitchen for a guided cooking experience where they choose one of three signature stews to prepare — Cassava Leaf Stew, Groundnut Stew, or Potato Leaf Stew — paired with traditional accompaniments and shared during a communal dinner with music, wine, storytelling, and conversation.
Guests leave with printed recipe cards for all three stews, an ingredient substitution guide for international shopping, knowledge of where to source African ingredients abroad, and memories of a shared cultural dining experience.
Food in Sierra Leone is deeply tied to family, celebration, resilience, and community. Meals are often prepared collectively, with recipes passed down through generations through observation, memory, and practice. Cassava became essential throughout West Africa because of its ability to thrive in difficult conditions and feed communities consistently.
Groundnut stew reflects indigenous farming traditions, while potato leaf stew highlights the creativity of Sierra Leonean home cooking. For many throughout the African diaspora, these flavors carry echoes of ancestral traditions that survived displacement during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. In Sierra Leone, food is never just food. It is hospitality, memory, survival, and love served from one hand to another.
