Freetown — A City Born of Freedom
The country\'s capital, Freetown, is a historical monument in itself. Its name comes from the freed slaves who returned to Africa following the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. The first group arrived in 1787 with British assistance and were known as the Black Poor. They settled in what was then called the "Province of Freedom."
Later, other groups of freed Africans — the Nova Scotians, Maroons, and Receptives (also known as Liberated Africans) — joined the original settlers, creating the unique and proud Krio identity that shapes Freetown to this day.
